North American X-15 rocket powered research plane. This plane explored the realm of manned hypersonic flight to speeds in excess of Mach 6. The highest recorded speed by this aircraft was Mach 6.7, over 4500 mph. It still holds the record as the fastest manned rocket powered aircraft.
